One night. One court. No way out until dawn.
Elowen Thorne is the only mortal in a fae palace where every word can bind and every promise draws blood. As Archivist to Winter's cursed heir, she has kept them both alive through law, nerve, and one legal protection no one has yet managed to strip from her.
Tonight, a blizzard seals the mountain passes and locks the entire court inside Frostbound until sunrise. Three factions see their chance. A foreign envoy offers a cure for the heir's curse — at a price designed to disarm Elowen in public. A chancellor frames her legal reforms as structural weakness. And a merchant from her past carries a scroll-case he wants her to notice.
The mirrors that enforce every oath are already cracking. Two fractures down, one from cascade. Each broken promise tightens the trap. Each alliance costs something she may not get back.
By dawn, the law will have changed. The only question is whether Elowen wrote it — or whether it was written over her.
Story
(Excerpt from “A Night of Gilded Frost” by Arden Neris)
'I wasn’t trying to make you smaller,' he said. 'I know that doesn’t help. I know intention doesn’t repair it. But I want the shape of it said cleanly. I thought if I could end the pressure fast enough, I could spare you the rest of it. That was the thought. It was the wrong one.'
Elowen let out a slow breath.
'I know why you did it.'
That should have eased something. It didn’t. Not yet.
She turned then and studied him properly. Mask still on. Mouth uncovered. Eyes steady.
'I also know what it would have cost me if you’d finished the sentence,' she said. 'And I need you to know that too.'
'I do.'
'No.' Her voice stayed calm. That was worse than anger. 'I don’t think you do yet. Not all the way.'
He waited.
Below them, wind dragged snow across the paving in long pale sheets. Somewhere in the lower yard a horse stamped once and then again, impatient with weather and humans alike.
