In July 1945, at the Potsdam Conference, U.S. Secretary of State James F. Byrnes asked Joseph Stalin what had happened to Hitler.

Stalin replied that Hitler was still alive — possibly hiding in Spain or Argentina.

But by then, Soviet investigators had already gathered evidence from Hitler’s bunker and begun reconstructing his final days.

So why did Stalin say it?

Did he lie? Did he distrust his own security services? Was he genuinely uncertain — or did he know something else?
